Six decades of the finest saloons
The E-Class family tree dates back to 1947, when the 170 V, the first post-war Mercedes-Benz passenger car, was introduced. It laid the foundation for the many great mid-sized Mercedes-Benz saloons that followed - such as the ‘Ponton', the legendary ‘Fintail', and the ‘Stroke 8s', whose name denoted their debut year of 1968 and whose timeless design still stirs the soul of many a Mercedes aficionado. The Stroke 8s' replacement, known internally as W 123, proved even more popular, setting a new sales record during its nine-year run, before handing over to W 124 in 1984, the car that later became the first Mercedes-Benz to officially take the name ‘E-Class'. It, in turn, was followed in 1995 by the first E-Class to feature the ground-breaking twin-headlamp face. Now the ninth generation - internal designation W 212 - has moved the E-Class on again, combining the best of its illustrious predecessors and paying tribute to them in its styling, with rear wings reminiscent of the Ponton's sleek flanks and a reinterpretation of the distinctive twinheadlamp design. What's more, it benefits from over eight generations' worth of progress in safety and comfort, and features its own fair share of innovations too. True to its past and yet ready for the future, it's a worthy inheritor of the E-Class tradition.
