Mercedes-Benz GLS now available to order

The entry level model is the GLS350d, yet it's anything but the basic specification you get at entry level for other cars. Standard equipment across the GLS range includes an 8-inch screen and touchpad with the latest generation of COMAND Online, air suspension with adaptive damping, Intelligent LED headlights, leather upholstery with memory front seats and heated seats in the front two rows, parking package with 360° camera and three zone climate control.

You can upgrade the GLS350d to designo Line specification, which adds diamond pattern nappa leather, heated and cooled front seats, four-zone climate control including the third row of seats and temperature-controlled cup holders. Active Curve System is also included, with active suspension stabilisers that reduce the rolling motion in higher-speed bends and increase off-road axle articulation.

In both cases, the GLS350d is powered by a 3-litre V6 diesel engine, which produces 258 hp and 620 Nm of torque, and emits 199 g/km of CO2. This is couple to a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The third model for the UK market is the GLS63 AMG. This uses a 585hp 5.5-litre biturbo V8 and the performance is suitably stunning for an AMG model. 0-60mph takes just 4.6 seconds, with a limited top speed of 155mph.

The new interior offers a spacious environment for up to seven passengers, with boot volume of 295 (all seats in place), 680 (third-row seats folded) or 2300 litres (all rear seats folded). The load compartment is up to 2124 mm long and has a payload capacity of up to 815 kg.

Adaptive, two-stage airbags for driver and front passenger, kneebag for the driver (combined thorax/pelvisbags) and windowbags above all three seat rows are also part of the standard specification, with driver assistance system like crosswind assist, brake assist, pre-safe collision and collision prevention assist plus also fitted as standard.

Prices start from £69,100, with the first cars on the road in the UK in March 2016.
