In production since last year, this is Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sports car. Elegant and athletic, it just demands to be driven.

The long, sweeping bonnet and expressive front section create presence and poise from the front, while the distinctive glasshouse at the back has a sloping ‘fastback’ roofline and tail that highlight the wide, powerful rear.

Aviation design is a key theme, and inside, the ‘cockpit’ redefines high-performance luxury. The finishes and materials are second to none, such as the nappa leather upholstery, including the stylised air vents and wing-like dashboard.

The engine is a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo that produces 462hp at 6,000rpm and 600Nm of torque between 1,600 and 5,000rpm, taking the two-door coupé to 62mph from a standstill in just 4.0 seconds. And it still returns 30.4mpg.

Thanks to its lightweight, mostly aluminium construction and front mid-engine layout, the AMG GT handles sensationally. The low centre of gravity and 47:53 front/rear weight distribution give it effortless composure and balance, while the race-bred double wishbone suspension means outstanding response plus agility.

The aerodynamics have been finely honed to augment performance, with all the surfaces and components created to optimise traction and air flow. What’s more, an electrically extendable rear aerofoil cuts lift at higher speeds.

As Gorden Wagener, the vice-president of Design, Daimler AG, who led the design team, said: ‘The new Mercedes-AMG GT is a sports car in its purest form. Breath-taking proportions, powerfully sculpted surfaces and flowing lines turn the new AMG into a contemporary sports car which embodies the spirit of the glorious Mercedes sports cars from the past. The GT is a consummate combination of beauty and intelligence.’
