The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been named What Car? Luxury car of the Year for 2016.
Having already won the ‘under £70,000’ luxury car category, the S-Class was also announced as the overall winner of the prestigious award - which is also the model's tenth win in the category.
Now in its sixth generation, the Sonderklasse or ‘Special class’ has been the head of the luxury car market for over 40 years and the current series is no exception. Carrying the reputation for being the car to look at if you want to know what technologies will be on family cars in the next decade, the S-Class isn't just a leader in the segment but a barometer for the car industry as a whole.
Attracting particular praise in this year's awards were the S-Class's comfort and safety features. Magic Body Control is the world's first predictive adaptive suspension technology, scanning the road ahead for things that may affect the ride and adjusting the suspension at each wheel individually to compensate before it reaches the car. Intelligent Drive meanwhile uses all of the car's sensors and cameras to create an observed environment around it and avoid any incidents.
The S-Class range has extended in recent years too, beyond the familiar luxury saloon. A 2 door Coupe model arrived in 2014 and 2016 will see the debut of the elegant S-Class Cabriolet, the first four-seat convertible from the brand since 1971.
Alongside the S-Class's success, the CLS also took home an award in the large executive car sector. The CLS 350d AMG Line picked up the ‘Best Buy More Than £50,000’, scoring highly for the high-quality interior, performance, refinement and the attractive exterior design.
